SYA SOCCER HOUSE ALL STAR TEAMS POLICY
Purpose:
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that SYA All Star Teams, including coaches, are selected, practice and play in an equitable, sportsmanlike, and enjoyable manner.
Coaches:
The coaches for SYA All Star Teams shall be the best coaches available to guide SYA House All Star Teams. The selection of All Star coaches will be done by the age group coordinators and approved by the appropriate commissioners. The following criteria may be used to select the All Star coaches:
- Level of coaching certification/license and date obtained
- Attendance at SYA coaching clinics
- Experience/ability as a youth soccer coach
- Character and integrity
Player Selection Processes:
Players will be selected for All Star Teams through one of two ways:
- The "Modified Coach Pick" Method – Players are nominated by their house league coach. The number of nominations will be calculated by the age group coordinator. These nominations should be ranked by the house league coach. The All Star coaches and/or the age group coordinator will watch the nominated players for a least 2 games in order to make the final selections. No tryouts. – Players are nominated by their house league coach. The number of nominations will be calculated by the age group coordinator. - The "Tryout" Method – Age group coordinator decides how many nominations may be made per team to attend the tryout. House league coaches nominate their allotted number of players for tryouts. The age group coordinator, All Star coaches and other evaluators conduct tryouts and notify all participants of results. All Star head coaches are guaranteed one selection on the All Star team. – Age group coordinator decides how many nominations may be made per team to attend the tryout. U-10’s and below will only be selected using the modified coach pick method. For divisions U-11’s and older, the commissioner and age group coordinator will determine the selection method prior to the pre-season coaches’ meeting. Prior to approval, the age group coordinator must submit tryout procedures, methods, and criteria for selection to the house commissioner and the All Star coordinator. The selection method will be announced and the selection procedures, complete with number of players to be selected per age group, will be distributed at the coaches’ meeting.
Deviations from the stipulated selection procedures must be approved in advance of any action, jointly by the commissioner, the age group coordinator, and the All Star coordinator.
Players "playing up" to their grade level during the regular season house league are only eligible for all stars in the same age group they played in during the regular season.
All player names must be submitted to the soccer office for written approval prior to notification of all star selection. The All Star coach is the only person who may notify players of their selection. Players should not be notified until the All Star coordinator has received verification of acceptance into the All Star Tournament (usually four to five weeks prior to the tournament date). All players must be available for all tournament games.
PLAYERS MAY NOT BE REMOVED FROM AN ALL STAR TEAM ONCE THEY HAVE BEEN OFFICALLY NOTIFIED OF THEIR PLACEMENT ON THE TEAM BY THE ALL STAR COACH.
Practices:
:
All Star team practices will not interfere with regular season practices or games.
All Star practices will be held independently from house league practices. All Star practices shall be limited to two hours per day, including scrimmage times. After the regular season concludes, up to three practices per week may be held. The regular season ends when the last regular season game has been played. Tardiness and absenteeism at practices may jeopardize a player’s good standing, which could be a factor in playing time.
Uniforms:
:
Each All Star player will be required to purchase an SYA All Star jersey. In cases of financial hardship, the All Star coach should contact the All Star coordinator. Uniform shorts and socks are at the discretion of the individual All Star team; black shorts and either black or red socks are preferred. Coaches may order additional shirts at their own expense.
Number of Players:
The maximum number of All Star players per team is dictated by the tournament entry guidelines (provided by the tournament which SYA is entering). The age group coordinator should consider putting less than the maximum number of players on the roster. The number of teams to be fielded will be jointly decided by the commissioner, age group coordinator, and All Star coordinator based on the number of registered players and available budget for tournament applications. The number of teams to be fielded, and thus the number of players to be selected, will be determined after all "scheduled" registrations have been held. This information will be distributed at the pre-season coaches’ meeting.
Assuming budget, available coaches allow, and tournament acceptance, the goal will be to field sufficient teams to allow a maximum of twenty-five percent of players per house league team to play on an All Star team.
